Prepare Orchard CMS Blog Post

Orchard CMS makes it real easy to prepare a blog post while giving you the capability of fully customizing the blog post to your needs. Before beginning your blog post though, we encourage you to first import the media you plan on using in your blog post into the media manager. While you can technically do this at the same time, we find it easiest to have your media fully prepared before you start creating your blog post.

Step by Step Instructions on Orchard CMS Blog Post Basics

  1. First, you need to log in and then go to the dashboard

  2. When you get in the dashboard, go to the "Blog" section on the left hand side and click the down arrow to expand the section (if not already expanded)
    1. Note that if you have multiple blogs on your website, you will just click on "Blog" to be taken to a list of your different blogs where you can click "New Post" for the particular blog you want to add a post to
  3. Click on "New Post" to begin preparing your new Blog Post

  4. As with almost every Orchard CMS content item, you will first give your blog post a "Title"

  5. Next, go ahead and fill in the "Body" section of your blog post
    1. This is the actual content of your blog post
  6. Notice at the bottom, by default, the "Body" editor does not start you out in a paragraph (or any html markup for that matter)

  7. To ensure proper formatting, you will want to click on your blog post content
  8. Once selected, you can press the "Paragraph" drop down in the WYSIWYG editor to select "Paragraph"

    1. As an alternative to using the drop down, a useful shortcut to remember is "Shift + Enter" as this will automatically turn your content into paragraphs (as opposed to just line breaks)

  9. Next you can move on to the SEO Meta Data section and provide some "Keywords" for the content you have written about
    1. Keywords are either single words or short expressions summarizing your content. They do not appear visually on screen.
  10. The "Description", while not directly influencing your search engine ranking, does provide a nice summary of your content in the search results list
    1. Even though the description also does not appear visually on screen, it does display in search results and is used in the Social Metadata section (see below) so we encourage you to always fill it in

    2. If you are a client of Endless Mountain Solutions, you will also have a feature called "Social Metadata" which designates how the content / media should be viewed when shared in social media (you can just leave the default configuration)

  11. The "Promotional Image" is the primary image for the blog post and is, by default, the image set up to be shared on Social Media
    1. To select a Promotional Image, simply click "Add" and follow the prompts to select your media

  12. The "Related Service" is a common addition we have on client's blog post that allows you to relate your blog article contents back to services your company performs
    1. To select a Related Service, simply click "Add" and follow the prompts to select your content

  13. "Tags" are a nice means of grouping your Blog Posts together, making it easier for others to find related information
    1. To utilize a tag, just start typing. If one exists it will popup below and you can select it, if not, just finish typing and you will have made a new tag
    2. To have multiple tags, just separate them with a comma
  14. "Comments" allow website visitors to leave feedback on what you have written about (you can just leave the defaults)

  15. The "Created On" section allows you to set the date and time (or just leave empty to have automatically filled with the current date and time)
  16. The "Save" and "Publish Now" buttons control how your information is saved for later. The "Save" button will create a draft of the work you have in progress - the changes will not appear on the website. The "Publish Now" button will save your changes and publish the work - the changes will appear on the website
  17. The "Publish Later" section is very powerful, it let's you select a date and time that you want the content to appear live on the website. Once you have set the date and time, just click on "Publish Later" and Orchard CMS will automatically publish (i.e. make visible on the website) the blog post at the time you selected.
